Synopsis

In the summer of 1959, filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini in his Fiat Millecento embarked on a journey commissioned by "Successo" magazine, starting in the town of Ventimiglia near the French border. From there he drove around the Italian boot to Trieste - a total of over 3,000 kilometers. He was accompanied by the photographer Paolo Di Paolo. The texts and images that emerged on this journey have long been considered cultural-historical documents from an Italy that no longer exists in this form. In September and October 2017, director Pepe Danquart set out on Pasolini's trail with his cameraman Thomas Schneider and a small crew. For seven weeks, they followed his route - also in a Fiat Millecento - to retrace his impressions and at the same time paint a picture of Italy today.

Pepe Danquart captures a region caught between la dolce vita and a nostalgic doomsday atmosphere, in a riveting, visually powerful and illuminating documentary film which astutely observes how tourism and industry are intertwined and how these two cultures have changed over time.
